MLP: The Elements of Harmony

tsukinofaeriiTL;DR, I've been struck by the My Little pony craze. And now, you all have to put up with it. I'm not sorry. You may blame stormseye and valtyr. I probably won't do this regularly, so be grateful.
We start out with a story. A long time ago (a thousand years), there were two princesses who ruled the land of Equestria. (No kings or queens; IDK why just roll with it.) One raised the sun, the other raised the moon, and there was peace and harmony.
Predictably, the sister in charge of the moon grew bitter. The ponies of Equestria loved her sister's day, but they slept through her beautiful night. The sisters fought, and the princess who ruled the night went evil, bringing darkness over the land and becoming Nightmare Moon.
The other princess resorted to using the Elements of Harmony in order to imprison her sister in the moon.
This being the beginning of the episode, there's a legend that on the 1000th anniversary of the Summer Sun Festival, the stars will align to free the Mare and she'll bring Darkness Eternal. EEP. Our rather bookish leading pony, Twilight Sparkle, is reading this story in a book, noting that the 1000th anniversary is tomorrow!
Clearly, something must be done, just in case. So she trots off to the library to read up on the matter. On the way, she runs into a group of ponies who want her to come have fun with them.
She responds as bookish ponies are wont to in such situations.
Twilight, you see, doesn't have time for friends. She has work to do! If you feel an aesop coming on, you're probably right. The subtitle of the series may have tipped you off.
Along the way, we meet Spike, the baby dragon, and Twilight's helper.
Yes, he is exactly as adorable as he appears. Spike proceeds to help Twilight in her research at the Library (this may be my personal image of heaven).
Twilight, finding out how serious the problem is (essentially repeating it for the kiddies at home) immediately sends a letter to Princess Celestia... who writes back that Twilight needs to get her nose out of books and make friends! In order to do that, Celestia sends Twilight away from Canterlot to a little town called Ponyville, which is hosting this year's Festival. Twilight is under orders to oversee preparations and also...
MAKE FRIENDS.
Twilight is less than amused. Spike (who accompanied her) says that maybe the ponies of Ponyville have interesting things to say!
... or maybe not.
Making friends a bust (and also a waste of time, what with that prophecy and all), Twilight resolves to finish her duties as fast as possible. Then she'll go to Ponyville's library to try and find an answer. First stop, Sweet Apple Acres, which will be providing food. It's owned an operated by a pony called Applejack.
Applejack takes time to introduce her family (of which there seems to be a single boy, in a complete reversal of the Smurfette Principle). Twilight, though overwhelmed, is tempted into staying for pie.
Next, to check on the weather. A pegasus known as Rainbow Dash is supposed to be keeping the sky clear.
Huh. I wonder where she could be—
THERE SHE IS!
Unfortunately, there appears to have been a mishap. Eeps. Well, don't worry! Rainbow Dash is going to fix everything right up! She's an expert!
... sort of.
We find out that not only is Dash an amazing flier, but she dreams of joining the Wonderbolts, the premier fliers in Equestra.
It literally takes her less than 10 seconds to clear the sky. So obviously the weather is under control. Now, for decorations, which are being taken care of by a unicorn called Rarity.
Spike is... Um. (cough) "Impressed".
Rarity has a gift for beautiful things, and is horrified by the state of Twilight's hair.
She sets about fixing this. Immediately. Resulting in a short montage of pony outfits.
She's incredibly impressed by Twilight's origins in Canterlot.
And is determined that they'll be the best of friends. Twilight knows a narrative cue and hoofs it.
The only thing left to check is music. Ah, what's that over there?
The birds are tweeting in harmony! Think Sleeping Beauty when she's walking in the woods, pre-Phillip. It's beautiful! Twilight, figuring that this is the pegasus she's looking for. Say's hi. The reaction is... Well...
Whoops.
Twilight tries to explain, and introduces herself. The pegasus, it turns out is... mrmrmble.
Erm, what was that?
Mrrmmmbleeeep.
Ooooohkay then. So Twilight, understandably, backs off, turning to Spike to discuss things. Mmrbble sees them and...
Has an immediate joygasm.
This, it turns out, is Fluttershy. And she's never seen a baby dragon! And this baby dragon can talk! What do dragons talk about? She wants to know everything.
And thus begins a very long walk home for Twilight, while Spike tells Fluttershy the story of his life. "I started out as a cute purple and green egg..."
Fluttershy eats it up.
But alas, they are home now! Twilight attempts to use Spike as an excuse to get away, saying he's soooooo tiiiiiiired.
Fluttershy tries to help.
Alas, she's thwarted, and Twilight retires to the depths of the Library for some work!
Narrative being what it is, she's interrupted by a surprise party.
Remember that pink pony? The one she met first off? That is Pinkie Pie, and she's so so so so so incredibly happy. When she met Twilight she was like :O because she didn't know her and Pinkie Pie knows everypony and I mean everypony in Ponyville and then she was D: because Twilight must be new and if she's new that means she doesn't have any friends and then Pinkie Pie was sad and so she threw her a surprise party and now she has friends!
Twilight reacts appropriately for her character and the narrative.
Finally! The sun is due to come up! It's time for the celebration!
Twilight just hopes that the prophecy is wrong.
... that's not a good sign.
Matters proceed, though, and the Festival begins! Introducing, the ruler of all Equestria, the one who gives them the sun and the moon... Princess Celestia!
Come on, who didn't see this coming?
Everypony panics for a while (except Pinkie Pie, who thinks the Princess is just a master at Hide and Seek), before Nightmare Moon finally makes her inevitable appearance.
She gives the expected villain speech, with some back and forth where Twilight identifies her, and announces her plan: eternal night! No one is surprised. Then, she takes a page out of Maleficent's book and cackles a bit. I suspect it's cathartic, since villains do it so often.
Cue panic.
And, of course, the inevitable.
As you can see, this series is love and sparkle and rainbows. GO WATCH. NOW. I'm only up to Dragonshy, though. Working on it!

The execs also said the show had to be slice of life rather then the magical-defeat-the-villain format the pilot was.

Mmmrm, I can sort of agree with this, because the existence of regular villains makes for automatic violence/conflict, and that's sort of everywhere in media. Of course, occasionally dealing with a Villain wouldn't be a bad move, to follow up on the pilot, but the slice of life thing is pretty awesome too.
