tsukinofaerii: Whosoever findeth this hammer, if she be hot, shall wield the power of the gnarly Thor (Default)

This is officially the weirdest thing I've ever written, and coming from a fic-list that includes lunch specials as pets, that's saying something. The pairing, as it breaks down, is Yuki-Kyou-Tohru. No, I don't know what came over me.

If anyone cares, the prompt was "Blue". Er?

Author Notes: Damnit, [livejournal.com profile] shinineko1! Look at what you made me do! Written for [livejournal.com profile] hh_writersblock challenge 005, but the idea for the crossover is pure Neko-chan. She'll kill me when she reads the pairings, but it's her fault for getting me started on this thing! Of course, I was the one that got her started on the thing that got me started... Oi. And yes, I did invert things. HP audience, HP writing-style. No random Japanese! Frightening. Even more frightening, this is the longest fic I've ever written in such a short time. I don't like the perspective, I don't like the conclusion, and I'm not sure if it's HP/FB or FB/HP. But time-limits will do that. (sigh)

ETA: I've decided to re-do the challenge, since somehow I don't think this works out as HP...

"When's-- what's going on?" arms waving wildly for balance, Kyou balanced delicately on the edge of the third step in the staircase. "Put that thing down!" His orange hair bristled, crimson eyes wide in alarm.

"But-it's floating!" Big green eyes stared reproachfully at Kyou, while the cerulean-painted stick in her hand stayed pointed at the pillow. It hovered mid-air like some kind of demented fish. "I've never seen things float like that before!"

"Put it down now!" he yowled.

"Alright." Sighing, the girl sat the stick back in the box she'd found it in. Immediately, the pillow dropped to the ground. Some traces of blue stayed on her fingertips, probably from peeling paint.

"Where did that thing come from?"

"I was going through some of Mother's old things," she explained, waving a graceful hand at the boxes scattered around the main room. Her brown pigtails swung haphazardly, threatening to knock some of the smaller items off their boxes "Grandpa dropped them off. He said she would have liked me to have them-some of them came from her Grandmother, you know." She stared down at the tatami matt under her knees. "I didn't mean to cause trouble."

Kyou's temper visibly cooled. No one could ever stay angry at Tohru. "You didn't. I was just-- surprised. When's dinner?"

"In about an hour," she reassured him, putting everything back in its box before standing up. "I'm making oden."

Before Kyou could answer, a letter smacked him in the face. The delivering bird, a barn owl, flew off through the open door. He cursed at it, grabbing at the air to catch it, with no luck.

Thin, pale hands plucked the letter out from under his nose. "What's this?" Yuki asked mildly, examining the packet with thoughtful lavender eyes. It was thick paper, like parchment, and sealed with wax with an odd picture embedded in it. "Tohru, it has your name on it." He held it out to her.

"Mine?" She blinked and took the letter, working open the seal neatly.

"Why are you getting mail delivered by birds?" Kyou demanded, decidedly not leaning into Yuki's warmth behind him.

The rat chuckled and wrapped his arms around his waist, tucking his shoulder under his chin. "A few people on the far edges of the family keep owls for pets. I never asked why."

"That's not it." Kyou left it unsaid that for anyone, especially Tohru, to get any mail from an unknown Sohma was bad news indeed.

Tohru ignored them and read her letter. "Oh. Oops."

"Oops?" Both boys looked at her, ears perked.

"Improper use of magic?" She looked startled, eyes wide in a pale face. "I didn't even mean to though. It says people from the English Ministry will be by."

"What does England have to do with an old stick in a box?"

Outside, a horrible crash sounded on the doorstep, followed by an incredibly rapid amount of English. It was fast enough that Kyou's limited, barely passing-grade English, had no hope of even catching up. After a minute, the voices switched to Japanese, though with the oddest accents Kyou had ever heard.

"--blast it Potter, can't you even work a Portkey right?"

"You're the one who had it! I was just holding onto you!"

"Why do you even have to come?"

"You know why!"

Tohru brightened, as only she could when there were lunatics on her doorstep. "That would be them arriving, I suppose."

"I'll get it!" Kyou and Yuki both announced, then glared.

"Together?" Yuki asked quietly.

"Why not? I'll beat you later." Firmly removing Yuki's hands from his person, Kyou headed to answer the door, a smirking Yuki on his heels.

The people on their doorstep turned out to be two men, one dark-haired and the other as blonde as Ayame. Both were tall enough that they had to look upwards at them, but he supposed they were of average height for foreigners. Both were wearing dull black kimono, though they were nothing like any other kimono Kyou had ever seen.

The men were still bickering, using words like "Quidditch" and "mudblood" that Kyou didn't even want to guess at the meanings of. He supposed it was an English thing.

"Hello?" Yuki asked from beside him, leaning against the door frame. "Can we help you?"

The dark haired one quieted mid-sentence. "Sorry," he apologized. "We're looking for Tohru Honda?"

"What do you want with her?" Something about them both raised the hairs on the back of Kyou's neck.

"Nevermind what we want with her, Muggle," the blonde sniffed. "Just go get her."

"Now listen you--"

"I'm Tohru," a voice piped from just behind them.

The blonde smiled brilliantly, raising Kyou's anger levels by five points. "I'm Draco Malfoy, and this is my assistant, Potter." The black haired boy made a strangling noise, which the blonde ignored. "You received a letter from the Japanese Ministry?"

She nodded uncertainly, unmoved by his charm. "Yes, I did. Please, come in." She parted her protectors like curtains and waved the visitors in. "Please excuse the mess, I was just going through some of my mother's things. May I offer you something to drink or a snack?" She offered them seats around the low table, smiling happily when they sat before seating herself.

On unspoken agreement, Kyou and Yuki sat on either side of her. The gray-haired rat dropped a kiss on Tohru's cheek. In retaliation, Kyou put a hand on the small of her back.

"We're only here for a moment, thank you," Potter answered for Malfoy. "What school were you trained at, Miss Honda?"

"Eh?" Her puzzled expression said it all.

"In magic?" Malfoy added, eyeing Tohru's protectors with a cold eye.

"Oh, I wasn't trained at all."

"Excuse me." Potter's lips formed several questions silently before he settled on a single one. "The translator must be malfunctioning. Did you say you've never been trained in magic?"

"Yes, I did. Is there a problem?"

Potter started to answer, but a thud under the table cut him off. He grimaced, and Malfoy took the opportunity to take over the conversation. "We'll have to report that to your Ministry, but it shouldn't be a problem. What we're interested in is a wand."

"A wand?"

"A wooden stick, about the length of a forearm," Potter added, glaring at his partner. "Your Ministry got word that you activated it just a few minutes ago. We were sent to retrieve it."

Tohru hesitated. Kyou could see the difficulties going through her head. She had very few things of her mother's left, and to just hand anything over must have been hard to think about.

"Why do you need it?" Yuki asked for her. His hand touched Kyou's on Tohru's back. Absently, Kyou laced their fingers, watching their visitors fiercely.

"It was my mother's," Potter answered immediately. Malfoy hissed a warning, but Potter just rolled his eyes at him. "They deserve to know."

"No they don't!"

"Pardon my rudeness," Tohru interrupted quietly, "but I'd like to know you need it, if it's not any trouble."

Potter smirked at his partner triumphantly before looking at them. "It belongs to my mother, and vanished when she was murdered. Her last spell was a very stong protection spell placed on me, and it might help to defeat her murderer if we can find out what spell she used."

"It belonged to Tohru's mother," Kyou snapped. "How do we even know you're telling the truth?"

"Kyou!" Tohru sounded shocked.

"He has a point," Yuki agreed quietly.

"Could we talk to the lady?" Malfoy brushed the hair out of his eyes. "I'm sure she'd agree."

"I'm sorry, she passed away several years ago." Tohru's voice was hardly louder than a whisper. "It was a car accident."

Potter was stricken. "I'm so sorry."

"It's alright," she smiled, but it was only a ghost of her usual brilliance. "I'll go get the-- wand, did you call it?" She pushed away from the table and hurried out.

Kyou debated throwing their visitors out the door before Tohru came back.

"We didn't know," Malfoy snapped, leaning towards the other Englishman. "We wouldn't have asked if we did."

"Why don't you--"

"Here it is!" Tohru bounced back into the room, suddenly glowing again as she settled between Kyou and Yuki. The wand rested snuggly in the palm of her hand, for all that she held it like delicate china. Blue smudged her palms and knuckles. "I hope it helps." She held it out, handle first.

Malfoy stared at it like a venomous snake. "It's."

"Blue," Potter finished, taking it. His hands acquired the tint immediately.

"I was going to say 'a legend'," the pale man replied quietly. "When... when a wand's owner dies they're... supposed to leave part of their magic, their personality. If it's strong enough, it's supposed to change the wand-- make it useable for anyone." Reverently, the blonde traced the length of the wood, coloring his entire fingertip blue. "That's solid magic there, Harry. Your mother's magic."

"That explains how I could use it," Tohru's smile tightened things in Kyou's throat, all traces of sadness washed away. "Please-- take it. It wants to help. I can tell."

"Thank you very much, Miss Honda," Malfoy answered quietly.

The entire situation was far too weird for Kyou. "You can feel it?"

She nodded along with the two men. "It's like. Here!" One of her colored knuckles smeared over his cheek. It tingled, effervescent under his skin. Strange emotions slid behind his eyes: a child-like joy, love so fierce it made his heart pause and a gentle anger that burned like tears. Throat suddenly tight, Kyou just nodded.

Potter cleared his own throat and stood. "We should go. If you'd like to contact us for any reason, just ask an owl to take one of us a letter. If it's a wild owl, you might have to bribe it a bit."

Kyou sat in a daze while Tohru showed the visitors the door.

Yuki scooted over and touched his cheek with a soft hand, eyes dark with worry. "Is it that strange?"

He nodded. "Yeah... It is."

The rat just smiled and kissed his forehead. "Maybe we should go see Shigure, Hatori and Ayame for dinner. I don't think Tohru will be in the mood to cook after all that excitement."

Kyou nodded, countering with his usual argument about Ayame's cooking. In the back of his mind, he couldn't help but wonder how things were going to change next.
