Neko's drabble is done! ^~ Okay, so the title isn't at all original. Bite me. It's.. kind of from an RP we're doing (and will be doing until the day one of us dies, probably in mid-sentence), but also before it. I kept the references to a minimum, so even people who haven't seen our RP (namely anyone but myself and Neko) will be able to follow it.

For anyone who's interested, it seems that I wrote and posted this on a new moon. Cool. ^-^

The new moon set over the old tree in the gardens, and the scent of dying leaves lingered on the crisp autumn air. Sesshoumaru leaned over the windowsill, chin resting on his arms, white hair pooling around his shoulders in a silken froth that better suited a woman. Peace weighed heavily on his heart and eyelids, dragging them both down. The sound of his brand new baby brother protesting the new moon echoed in his head as the quiet finally took him away...
Sesshoumaru crossed his arms on the windowsill and looked out into the gardens, which were just blooming into spring. Birds sang their last songs as they settled for the night, soft music that nothing human or demon could reproduce. The perfume of jasmine from the far side of the grounds wafted on the warm breeze, a soothing and familiar scent from childhood. It had been the one thing he'd insisted on keeping exactly as it had been, and he'd never regretted the decision.
In the ancient, thick-limbed oak just in sight from the window, InuYasha's white-topped figure lounged watching the the new moon set, a dark splotch of shadow against the exotic blues and lavenders of the oncoming twilight. The warm scent of hanyou blended with the jasmine, musk and spice with just a touch of the mellow coolness that marked human blood. The change as it happened was fascinating to smell, and Sesshoumaru's golden eyes closed, measuring his brother's progress from hanyou to human with his nose. The spice surged, then fell and vanished in increasing degrees, being replaced by the human scent. When he opened his eyes, the sun had completely vanished into the night, and so had all traces of demon on the breeze.
No other human had ever smelled quite the same as his brother, Sesshoumaru marveled quietly. It was exotic and soothing at the same time, sending a tingle down his spine that had nothing to do with anger. The demon stood out even when it was gone, a lingering trace of power that nothing ever erased. Up in the tree, InuYasha was a darker blur against the shadow of the tree, practically invisible with neither moonlight nor his white mane of hair to mark him out. An image of his mate rose in Sesshoumaru's mind: dark-haired and -eyed, delicate as a flower petal with his unaccustomed humanity, ripe for the picking.
Sesshoumaru stretched and hopped through the window, landing silently among the decorative shrubs and flowers.
Rin had taken the puppies for the night, much to Sota and Ame's disappointment. And up in the tree, his dear brother and mate was more clueless than usual, too wrapped up in his own changes to notice much else.
That suited Sesshoumaru fine. Prey was always easiest to catch unawares, and a taste for human ran in their family. A new moon came far too infrequently, and he never wasted opportunities when presented so tastily...
The sound of the nursery door closing snapped Sesshoumaru out of his doze. The moon and sun had finished their routines, leaving the gardens in darkness, and the breeze had grown colder than comfort allowed. The rest of the castle had settled down for the night to story-telling and conversation.
A dream, mostly remembered as a warm a spot under his heart and a tint of human on the wind, stirred his curiosity. It was the second new moon since InuYasha had been named, the third since his birth, and in that time he'd never seen the hanyou in his other form. After closing the shutters so softly that they barely clicked, he set off down the hall, bare feet making scuffing sounds as he padded to the nursery.
No windows were in the baby's room, a guard against kidnapping, but enough light leaked in from the lamp set in the hall that he could clearly see the tiny bundle in the bed. Black hair stuck up wildly from his brother's head instead of his ears, and the fingers that clutched the sheets were clawless. Kneeling down to take a closer look, Sesshoumaru's caught his breath as the baby opened his dark eyes. Carefully, Sesshoumaru offered a finger down to the infant. Chubby, weak fingers gripped it, and the two brothers caught gazes for what felt like a thousand heartbeats.
"I could kill you, you know," he whispered. A gummy smile was his only answer.
It was forever before the baby fell back asleep, little hand falling limp. Sesshoumaru stayed close, watching him in vigil, determined to stay awake to watch his brother change back. He never made it to sunrise, but his last thought before sleep finally claimed him was that this tiny thing called his brother was his, and nothing would ever take him away. Ever.
