Thin candlelight flickered over gathered shadows and they leaned inward to examine the papers laid out on an aging desk. White masks gleamed inside concealing hoods. Only one man remained unmasked. He alone sat at a chair, face carved in severe lines. "How many dead this time?"
"Five students, seven government officials and a muggle," one person reported, silky voice sliding through the darkness like a sweet poison. "The Daily Prophet is calling it a return of 'Death Eater' attacks."
Eyes green as a toad stared down at the slightly singed scrap of parchment spread on the desk before him. Five children, he mourned. "And half of the casualties just happened to be anti-Dumbledore?" Tom Riddle gripped his graying black hair in hands calloused from years of fighting and hard work. Decades of terror and a slowly rotting society spread out before his eyes, orchestrated by a foolish-looking wizard and allowed by an apathetic populace. "He even has the Prophet fooled, damn him. Is there anything to report on Potter?"
A shadow stepped forward, slightly shorter than the rest. "Weasley keeps good tabs on him. I can't get close without him turning it into a brawl." The voice cracked somewhere between an adult bass and a childish tenor. Gray eyes peered through a mask slightly too large for it. "They've been feeding him lies so long, I don't think he'd believe the truth if he witnessed it for himself."
"Keep trying," Tom ordered. "He's the only one who can kill Dumbledore; we have to get him out before they decide he's a liability."
"What about the Weasleys?" the shadow asked.
"Potter's the key. They're good people. They'll come with him. Try working through Granger. She must have realized how few Muggleborns there are in Hogwarts by now, and she's a logical thinker. She'll listen, if nothing else." The masked boy nodded and stepped back into the group. Tom stood and surveyed his loyal followers. Together they represented the hope of magical and muggle kind, and they could do nothing without Harry Potter. James, Lily... why didn't you trust me?
After a long moment of silence, Tom straightened, black robes whispering against themselves. "You all know your assignments, and I don't have to tell you what the price of failure is. Dumbledore has them all blinded. Our only hope is to remove the blindfold before he succeeds in his plans for genocide. All of you, be safe and good luck. Dismissed."
