I remember back when I was a wee one staying home from school and the X-men cartoons were still on TV. I think I only really watched them when I was down sick essentially an entire month, but there was one arc where Xavier and Magneto were lost in the Savage Land, and something about that magically cured Xavier's paralysis? They basically spent the whole arc helping each other survive and being the BESTEST OF BEST FRIENDS and sending my yet-undeveloped slash senses through the roof. I was so broken-hearted when I found out Magneto was a bad guy.
I tell people that if the leads had been het, they would have kissed on screen from that satellite scene, or that beach scene.
That's pretty much one of the reasons why I get so vocally flaily about obviously cockblocked-by-heteronormativity characters. It makes the problem so obvious when I can tell a usually-dense coworker that it's the Incredibly Tragic Love Story of Xavier and Magneto and he can't really argue.
The director (Vaughn) was trying to have a b plot where Xavier and Moira were falling in love, but he couldn't do it, because it was truly about Charles and Erik.
Did he even try? That kiss at the end came as a total surprise to me. At first I was expecting some shoehorned romance, but after the initial pickup line.. Nothing. By the end, I'd pretty much accepted that Charles/Moira was something that would end up waiting until Movie 2. And then BOOM, kiss out of nowhere.
Re: LOL, Erik/Charles have always almost been canon.
