tsukinofaerii: Whosoever findeth this hammer, if she be hot, shall wield the power of the gnarly Thor (Resume)
Back from strike! Well, technically I suppose I was back on Saturday night, but I never got around to unlocking and posting. *sigh* Anyways! I made me an IJ. It's nice, and I met some pretty awesome people! :D I'll be using that as my back-up and cross-posting regularly, but you know what? LJ's still home. No matter how screwed up it can be, lol.

My First IJ Post - Blogging about Not Blogging
My Second IJ Post - Letter to Jason Shellen

So what did I learn from all of this? Well, mostly that people can be asses. =P To address the asses: If you honestly believe that it's wrong to strike from a service you're providing content for (in this case, LJ), go ahead and anti-strike or whatever. (May I suggest not spamming, though, since it annoys completely innocent people?) But if you just think that it's stupid/lame/pointless... do yourself a favor and say so, then move on. You're doing nothing but making yourself look bad for the sake of a cause you don't even believe in.

But I also learned that people can be amazingly wonderful. To the amazingly wonderful: BIG thanks to all the IJers who supported us. I would have gnawed through my knuckles and made a fool of myself a dozen more times than I already did if it hadn't been for them. And to all the LJers who organized and spread the word. You all rock my socks. :D There's also been talk about LJ Clone Appreciation Fridays (or something like it). I'll probably take part, but everything will be cross-posted.

Finally, I learned that I'm not always right. I re-learn this a lot, actually, but in this case it didn't occur to me that anti-strikers could be anything but trolls. Someone reminded me that they have as much right to spread their opinion as I do to spread mine. So I apologize if I annoyed anyone by not recognizing the validity of their dissent.

I dig up some numbers, and I was going to post them. But you know what? Screw it. I didn't strike in an attempt to crash LJ's monetary base. I did it to make a point, and whether or not a single soul did it with me or whether we had any affect on the posts... I did it in hopes of changing LJ for the better. Those numbers are up to LJ's analysts to decipher. Not for me to swing around like a bludgeon to (attempt to) silence the nay-sayers. If anyone wants to see them I'll reply with them, but I'm not going to smear them all over like there's something to prove.

I will say this though: LJ's numbers in general are a lot lower than last year, or the year prior. This has me a little concerned. Well, a lot concerned. LJ's lost active accounts in the past year. Ignore the 15 million total on the main page - it means nothing. Use WayBack to check the stats page. They're hosting more info with less fresh content to show for it. (cracks knuckles) So we've got to get LJ back up on its feet ASAP, and the first step there is cleaning up this mess with the Interests and Basic, then getting the Policy straightened out. Once those are done and seem to be holding, people will feel more comfortable dragging their friends over, and some refugees might return. Keeping LJ from vanishing is about more than screaming when they do something wrong — it's also about helping the site grow! Gotta keep that in mind.
