Ding, dong...
Dec. 3rd, 2007 10:24 amWell, I'm sure everyone who reads me has probably noticed the happy little "flag this" that's now showing up on pages, and knows what it means. If you don't, check out this post here, and this one over here. As a personal request, I'd like for someone to tell me when any of my posts are collapsed so I can appeal it. The journal owner is not notified, and as I'm seldom logged out, it means that I'll have no clue when my posts are collapsed.
My policy regarding this new feature is that I won't be using it. At all. For one, I don't like the ugly "all or nothing" cut that's being used. Secondly, I find the flagging system highly offensive. I know I was one of the people crying out for something like an "adult only" button, but this was so not what I had in mind. What I wanted was for anything I marked to be visible only to people 18+ who are logged in, in which case it would look normal, other than maybe a small graphic like the locked-entry icon. I don't care about offending people - I just don't want to get in legal trouble. So my current system is staying in place, at least until I find out what the policy is on explicit adult content/adult concepts. They're claiming that it's a voluntary setting, but I doubt it. Friends-locked is good enough for me right now.
Onto more recent news... Six Apart, our clueless overlords, finally sold us out. Livejournal has been acquired by a Russian company known as SUP. Official ownership will be to a newly-established Cali-based company called LiveJournal Inc. Official word is that this company was made so as to have an overlord which focuses solely on LJ. My opinion is that it was made so Russian politics can affect it as little as possible. LJ is a big free-speech forum in Russia, something the government over there isn't very happy about. Hopefully this extra distance from Russian politics will keep things from descending into something worse than we currently have. This has been in the works since before Strikethrough, so I'm thinking that recent changes (the flagging system, crackdown on porn, etc) is at least partly linked to this. We all know Six Apart was utterly useless, though, so I'm in no hurry to shift the blame. I do, however, urge everyone to either join or monitor
lj_2008 and
lj_policy to keep track of the upcoming changes.
Right now, we don't have any real information, other than fluff and corporate-speak, so I'll edit this when we do get something to think about. Right now, my stance is this: LJ can either get worse, or better. If it gets worse, I'll finally get the guts to finish my move to GJ. If it gets better, I'll be pleasantly surprised. Win/Win.
