tsukinofaerii: Whosoever findeth this hammer, if she be hot, shall wield the power of the gnarly Thor (Truth on Paper)
And now it is time for my weekly fall into fen love. I WANT THESE PEOPLE'S JOBS. And I would kill to study under Henry Jenkins' fanly supervision.Take my left arm. PLEASE. The man has a Klingon bat'leth, for gods' sakes! How awesome is that?

*cough* Anyway, I was browsing the internet at work, bored out of my coffee-saturated mind because I just finished the rough of a story and thus have little inclination to try and work on one of my others (even if it were possible to get out more than a sentence at a time), and my vague plan for the next bit of Banman needs to be reconsidered - something best done at home in the bath or (in desperation) hanging upside down off my bed to encourage blood to clog my brain with ideas. (I should add a disclaimer. This last option isn't usually necessary, and sometimes produces odd results, but in the case of Banman odd is good.) My reading choices are limited, because I'm at work, and all the reasonable-looking fic I can find would probably get me fired. (What's so inappropriate about Control by therealkaichan, I ask you?)

During this jaunt around the e-world, I poked my head into live_wo_fanlib, to see if there'd been any drama lately to amuse and infuriate me. FanLib can usually be counted on to provide a source of amusement in my more dull hours. Even if it's probably not nice to be amused by them. =3 While there I stumbled (crashed is more honest) into a link for Henry Jenkins' Blog. Academic and therefore legit take on fannish activity, primarily positive in perspective? Oh, I am SO there. While browsing, I found this post, and its sequel, that had me resisting the urge to bounce in my chair. I wasn't able to resist the urge to squeal, though thankfully I managed to muffle it. Only a few people looked at me like I might bite.

The topic of these two posts are gender and fan culture, with a focus on the horror genre. The fic I just mentioned finishing? Yeah, it's horror. (Or I hope it is. o.o! Never done it before, so we'll see what Lyaka says.) Slashy horror at that, so opening the first post and seeing it immediately launch into ideas regarding the queer subculture and the transformative role of the monster was like being dropped into a pit of happy. I was incredibly stoked by finding something that seemed to have such incredibly good timing. (Halloween has nothing to do with it, I tell you! Nothing!) I can see what they're discussing take shape in the work I just finished, and it makes me squirm in creative delight.

I'm not going to summarize the posts for you. They're very thick reading, and any attempt on my part to parse them down into something the people on my flist could read in a nanosecond would be a disservice to both readers (assuming they're not smart enough to read the original) and authors (probable accidental bastardization of their text). I will say that I doubt I'll ever watch a horror movie with quite the same eyes as before.

Even if I do still detest slash-and-bash horror (or snuff horror, though snuff to me is something completely different from the way they use it) such as Scream or Saw. ^-^
