*headdesk* I'm an idiot. How did I forget this? Because he was especially worried that his friendship with Steve would be ended, and he still did what he thought he had to do. (Though it isn't so much a defense, maybe you could do something with Tony's daddy issues coming out in some Pinocchio-ish fashion, as in Tony isn't a real boy, a real son, a real Stark. [Some of my personal Howard-Stark-is-a-bastard canon includes Howard making sure Tony is informed that he was a mistake.])
