Happy New Year!
I'm baaaaaaack.
I've spent the last two days on a roof. :| The house needs new shingles, and Mary is not one to look askance at free labor. (sigh) On the plus side, I now know how to shingle a house. Yay, learned skills?
Otherwise, we've been spending a lot of time outside burning things and such, though one night we went ghost hunting. That was fun, and I will try to post some of the pictures we took. I ended up sitting in the middle of the graveyard all by myself for a while, which was not much fun. But I had a definite feeling that I shouldn't go near the graves they were going to investigate, and I've learned to listen to my gut on these things. (Turns out, the graves had Jesus Fish on them, sooooo...) Also, one of the recorders got its battery drained about 7 minutes in. Which was weird because we were all constantly checking to see if the power light was on.
TL;DR, my last few days have been a mix of fun and pain in the ass.
I received a care package fromdevious_lint, lupusdragon and cursor_mundi. I think the CIA got it. It was wrapped really oddly and some of the cookies had bites missing. oO I have not yet tried the Turkish Delight, as it looks rather gooey and I need ungooey'd fingers.
And now, a meme to pass the time.
Fics this year (oldest to newest, by fandom): Almost everything I wrote this year was in Marvel fandom, so... My oldest is This Woman's War, which was finished well before it was posted. My latest was... my Exchange Fic. Which shall not be linked. (Though I'm sure you all know which it is by now.)
Total Fics: About 40. :\ The switch to DW and Ao3 makes it hard to be certain. My rough total word count this year is... (drumroll)
270,000.

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted? More. Much, much more. D: I did not realize my word count was so high! All those little stories added up!
Where did you publish/archive your stories? Mostly on Ao3, though a few to LJ or DW.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in December 2009? My teeny little Satan's Alley fic. Could not have seen that coming if you'd given me a crystal ball.
What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest. Something Different, my Pepper/Natasha movieverse fic. It's just fun. I really enjoyed writing in Pepper's voice, and letting Tony/Steve play background for a while.
Okay, NOW your most popular story. Oh geez, IDK. I think ♥ wins, but Without Irony comes pretty close. (Though I wonder how many people would have reviewed if it hadn't had a cliffhanger ending?)
Story most under appreciated by the universe? Ohgods, definitely my favorite of the year, Something Different. It has... What, the same 6 people reviewing for a 23k story? But what do you expect for a femslash fic, eh?
Story that could have been better? (wince) Space Jello could have used a lot of work. (sigh)
Sexiest story? D: I don't think I had one. I was very porn-deficient this year. What is wrong with me?
Most fun story? I did a lot of crack and fluff pieces this year, but the one that was most fun to write was my fic exchange story. I just rolled right on through that. The characterizations were fun, the story was fun, the prompt was fun... It was just a blast all the way around.
Story with single sweetest moment? This Woman's War, between Stevie and Gail. They had a lot of ridiculously sweet moments, but the reunion just makes me ♥.
The story that made you cry? My NaNo made me cry a couple of times, and probably will do so more in the editing phase.
Hardest story to write? Without Irony, hands down. That story gave me all sorts of trouble, from writing in PoVs & tenses that I dislike to researching things for it. :| RAWR.
Easiest story to write? Results May Vary. Pure crackfic, but it was very easy to get done. I think I did it in one or two sittings? Which is not bad at all.
Most overdue story? Trial of Fire, my Final Fantasy XII AU cowrite with![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
moontear. It was updated in August, and we're only half way done with the next chapter. ¬.¬;
Most Unintentionally Telling Story: I think On the Road Home gets that award this year. The holidays have been hard for me, what with the father situation and all. :\ The last time I passed a holiday without even a call, it was after Mom and Dad ran off on me. Steve's got some echoes of that.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?This was a year full of writing risks. I did a lot of 20k+ stories, tried a bunch of new tricks (especially with color and formatting) and generally branched out. Without Irony had the most risks with tricks and PoV, but I think This Woman's War was generally a lot more risky. Rewriting Ultimate Steve Rogers as a woman, and openly rewriting hs origin in the process (instead of eliding it) should have crashed and burned. He's such a testosterone-soaked character. Surprisingly, it didn't.
What did I learn? I'm not sure. Maybe not to fear philosophically heavy projects.
Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year? A few. 1) To do a sequel to Without Irony and This Woman's War. 2) Valtyr's auction fic. I know she doesn't mind that it's ridiculously late (since she's been inspiring other fics in me), but it needs doing. 3) Try to reach 150k on a single fic—novel-length.

And I am totes not surprised that "This Woman's War" did not crash and burn -- you built it up from near zero with such detail that flameout was near impossible! :D

Ghost hunting is not so bad. I was fine until I got to the no-go part. :\ And even then, once I backed off I was fine again. Except for being made fun of. I'd like to see them keep going if they'd been in my shoes. Hmph.

You have more faith in me than I do! That story had all the technical makings of a failure (anvilicious for feminism, cliche genderswap of super-masculine character, retelling an origin story, flashbacks used frequently, etc). I'm surprised it worked! :o

Makings of a failure, perhaps, but at the same time -- all those things are very common in fan fiction, as well as pro fic, so I think your choices to avoid flameout were good. Retelling the origin story from the ground up helped, a lot, because it let you tie things together and demonstrates to readers where Stevie is coming from, so all her decisions flow organically from that point of origin. And starting the story with that ground up worldbuilding draws in the reader -- so after that, everything else was natural (anvilicious feminism? Bah, you can see why! gender-swap? Bah, Stevie's always been tomboyish, look at her gooooo! Flashbacks? YES PLEASE.). But that's why I'm not surprised; if you'd started the story with a "In the beginning" moment it might have worked, but you started with action, which then draws in the reader, and the retelling elements seem natural and flow well. *shrug*
