I keep meaning to say this, but in the fury of LJ drama, I keep getting distracted. Really, distraction is a good thing right now, so I'm grateful. So a quick blub, and then I'll put up my Strike info and whatnot.

One of our dogs passed away this week. She was old and sick, so she was finally put down. I didn't know her very well - I'd only moved in towards the end of her life, but I knew her as a puppy and visited when I was growing up. I disagree with pet-euthanasia because they can't give consent, but I know she was in pain and it was only going to get worse. That doesn't exactly make it easier to handle. :/

No it's never easy..

I do understand where you are coming from with this, I have put down MORE than my fair share of animals in my lifetime. It isn't an easy thing to do, but the way I see it, is YES they can't consent because they don't speak our language. But If they are in obvious pain, and they had a long full life, then what makes the situation any different from an elder-person asking to be put under, being put out of their misery. Would anyone like to live like that? I don't think animals see it any differently. We would watch our older cats and make sure that they wern't sneaking off, because when they did they would try to hide out somewhere to die. I feel it was almost a pride issue, would you want to have your families last memory of you throwing up all the time, not being able to control your bowels, etc.? I think not. Although dogs don't do this, they do lose there appetite and joy in things they once liked, once I see these tell "tail" signs, and the dog is very old, I know it's time.

I disagree. Right now we have laws that don't allow euthanasia. Period. Putting pets down is a double standard. If any life is precious, then at least no life is less precious than another. (I say as I eat a chicken sandwich.)

I'm so sorry about your dog.
