Writer's Block: Airplane reading

Wow, this seems topical. :D I typically bring along the same thing I always read, with an option on printed fanfics. Fantasy novels or maybe a couple old favorites fill my bag, at least three. I figure that way I have a better chance of having something I feel like reading. Just in case, I usually also bring along some drawing materials, even though drawing on a plane is a PITA, but I usually default to reading. This year, I'm planning on bringing along American Gods (never read it before— I know, I know, Gaiman is god, etc, that's why I'm bringing it), a book by a previously-proven author who seems to have seen Furuba and been inspired, and possibly a Discworld book. No printed fics this time, since my laptop will be with me, thus removing the need to murder trees for my own amusement. I plan to write while I'm in the air, but I need something to have out so I can make the stewardess frown at me during take-off and landing. I'm also bringing along Essential Iron Man 2 and some TPBs (New Avengers & Ultimates) to assist in converting the SPN masses keeping entertained.

Hmmm. I need to get around to posting goldrider!Tony before I leave out tomorrow. ¬.¬ I'm bad, I know. Also, Halloween!Fic is almost to the point where it will need a hardcore beta—it's down to tweaking the draft. D: Eeep! (hides)

I tend to carry a book that I haven't read before (because I buy books and throw down) as well as knitting. Yes, knitting.

:o Would you? It's 616 (er, sort of), but I'm not worried much about characterization so much as tone. It's... erm, yeah. >.>;;

I try to have a book that's new, but if I have to choose, I'll always go with one that I know I like. There's something terrible about getting on a plane and finding out that you're trapped for hours with a book that's as interesting as dishwater. Knitting seems like a very nicely portable hobby. ♥ Convenient for flying, at least.

Knitting is... temperamental. I've known airlines to reject knitting, unless you have wooden or bamboo needles (metal needles, HELL NO!).

(facepalm) Hoo... kay. Because a dull metal needle can somehow magically do more damage than a wooden one. Right. They might as well ban pens and pencils too, seeing as they're long enough to reach the brain through the eye socket. And pantyhose—makeshift garrote, anyone? /morbid

You can only buy liquids on the planes, after the shoe bomber and his madness in 2001 (it might been November, 2001? I was in Portugal that time).So yeah, madness. If you really wanted to go all 'human weapon' they couldn't stop you either.

I also carry cereal bars with me. I haven't been on a flight in... two, three years? The last place I flew to was Italy, and got mistaken for a Russian prostitute. That was... fun. Considering that I'm a woman of colour and all.

It's gotten really, really stupid. Pockets are probably more dangerous than shoes for the potential to hold explosives, but I note that they didn't make me empty my pockets out last time I flew. I did, however, have to take off my shoes—it's why I wear fuzzy slippers in the air. More convenient, and there's something amusing about a Big Bad Security Guard inspecting leopard printed fuzzies. :D

I usually bring jerky of some sort for gnawing on, but this year I'm going to have to buy food at the airport because of the way my schedule works out. D: I can't believe... Argh. x.X That's just wrong on so many levels, I can't even begin to enumerate them.
