Snake Chess
Hallo. I have a very strange idea, and I figured I'd run it by people randomly. (No, I'm not avoiding work for once. I'm waiting on something to finish so I can get the error message.) We all know how chess works IRL, and how long-distance chess works. It usually means having a board set up on each end and is pretty straight forward.
Chess is a very Slytherin game. Just not very Slytherin. :)
In short, I think I want to create a modified version of chess that reflects the HP series. This is pretty much purely to keep my brain occupied while waiting on the system to fail.
Here's what I have. Normal chess rules apply where they're not modified. (Yes, a lot of these changes are designed mostly to screw with the heads of the players and make it incredibly complicated.) These rules really would only be feasible in an online game, because there'd be no keeping track of what pieces can do what moves otherwise.
1) "Black" has no rooks or bishops - they're pawns. Instead, it has an extra queen, two pawns and a "dummy" king marked only on the bottom.
1a) The Dummy King can move exactly like a regular king, has six dice and is a regular King on the Imperio Chart, but does not count to the end of the game and has only one life.
2) "White" replaces two pawns with knights.
3) Pieces can be "killed" (removed from the game) or "Imperio'd" - converted to use by the opposing side.
3a) Pieces under Imperio are only under Imperio for a certain number of moves, depending on what piece "captured" them and their relationship. See the chart
3b) Pieces which require a "roll dice" to capture roll different numbers of dice depending on the piece involved. (Example - Kings rolls 6.) Only one die is kept. The person with the highest single die wins. If the attacking piece wins, the loser is Imperio'd. If the attacked piece wins, the winner can remove the other piece or start a new round of dice to attempt to Imperio the other. (Only one round each allowed, or a tie is declared by default.) In case of a tie, both pieces are removed from play.
3c) Pieces under Imperio which are re-captured are "freed", and resume normal play.
4) Kings "die" twice, and cannot be Imperio'd. After the first "death", the King is removed from the board for three rounds. During this time, Pawns of the "dead" king gain one square extra movement. After the "revival" rounds, the king is returned to its place at the start of the game and pawns return to normal.
Well? I wonder if I can find anyone to play me...
Edited because my table prowess is not so prow.

- Down is "Captured by".
- Across "Imperio'd"
- "NL" means "no limit".
- Numerical values are assigned in moves.
- R means "roll dice".
- Number by the piece [example: Queen (5)]) indicates number of dice rolled.

(nods) I've tried to do that, really, but the epilogue just throws everything to pieces. I don't want my boys to have kids through women, gr! That and book 7 took such a drastic change in everything... we really should have heard about the Hallows ages prior to book 7. Instead it's like... "Fight fight kill kill oh and here's some magic items that can fix everything yay The End." xx
LOL Slytherin rocks. I can never say that enough. It's even more maligned than Hufflepuff. At least they've got a rap as good guys.
Whoohoo! Good for your friend - college is necessary, damnit! And it's also great that you two can go together. ^_^V

I actually liked how book 7 tied everything into place. Although admittedly I'm torn between throwing the book away from me and laughing aloud when I read the Final Battle, xD GO MRS. WEASLEY! Hahahaaaaa.....
I'm actually evenly distributed, my personality is, to all four houses. I'm just MOSTLY Slytherin. But I could go into any of the houses and fit right in. :)
Heh, yeah. She doesn't know much about colleges -- at ALL -- so I'm doing the research. She trusts me, I know what she likes, and she wants both the beach and the mountains, which I'd love too..... she says she likes my choices of states to attend colleges in. So.....yeah. :D This should be itneresting.

My major arguments against the series are her "I'll kill... you, you and you" darts-like killing of characters and the Hallows. Gr. Other than that,it would have flowed just fine for me. Not what I wanted (hot steaming Gryffindor/Slytherin sexorz with a side of puppyshipping), but I wasn't going to get that. Also, she totally wimped out on Ginny. She could have been a string character in her own right. Instead she ended up revolving around Harry, getting a complete characterization make-over and doing nothing special.
I think most people end up evenly distributed, really, except in rare cases. Most of the time it's a choice (Hallo, Harry - snake or lion?) or a question of values. Me? I'm SnakeEagleLion. (Chimera. o.o!), but almost no Badger. My laziness and general lack of loyalty just don't seem to work there.
If you wanted mountains and beach, you're pretty limited on your choices. Hm...

Eh, well. My only big complaint is Lupin Died (NOOOO! NOT REMMY TOO!), and the whole book has a slightly rushed feeling, unlike her other books. Like at the end she was just in a hurry to get it all our on paper or something. *Shrugs*
You're a Chimera, yeah. That's awesome. XD
I'm really chivalrous. It can be a problem sometimes. :p I have loyalty almost to a fault, but it's born more out of obligation and the fact they were WILLING to be my friend, moreso then me actually being superduper loyal or anything..... *Grimaces*
New Hampshire and Washington and Massachusetts; we agreed those are our favorite states that we might go to. I'd consider NY, simply because it has good colleges. But I don't actually want to go there...*Frowns*
One of the colleges I'm really considering is near, like, 5 dif places. Canada, NY, Boston, Vermont....I think somewhere else, but I can't remember, lol. That'd just be cool. It's in NH, in case you couldn't figure that out, lol.
Mountains and beach; we could get that, with MA. And WA. Not so much with NH; beach is fun, but I prefer mountains. ^^;

By the time she killed Lupin, for me it was almost a release. She's tortured the poor guy through the whole of books six and seven. x.X It did feel rushed, but I put that down to so many details she should have hinted at earlier. It was just too thick with tiny stuff in a book that was mostly camping in the woods. ._.;
Hm. Does obligation-loyalty count? Besides, that's a Hufflepuff trait, really. I'm not sure why it gets attached to other Houses so much... (ponders)
CANADA. o.o! Whoa. COLD! (shiver) In fact, anwhere with mountains would be cold. so you're probably insane of some kind. (Like I'm one to talk...)

Yeah.....I'm gonna stop talking about Harry Potter now. It's making me annoyed at the books and movies.
(READ: I'm lazy, sick, and can't think of anything else to put down.)
*Frowns* Well, in my mind, none of the houses seem particularly "loyal". Granted some people are, but there are always exceptions for anything. *Shrugs* But even if you look at Hufflepuff OR Gryffindor, I mean, really. They'd take media over him any day, and that, dear one, is just stupidity. Some people would stick up for him, but I mean, even herm and Ron questioned him at times (ron a lot more so then Herm; he really made me mad a lot.....but he always did come to his senses, so I hold no lasting grudge to him. :D).
*Laughs* Most people prefer heat; it's an understandable thing. I'm the opposite, I (STRONGLY) prefer the cold! :D *Giggles* Really, you should see a day of me in heat, and a day of me in the cold.
Me in a good mood during a hot day would only happen if it's dry heat, and I'm near a body of water (pool, beach, lake, ocean).

lol I do that. Mentioning stopping. ^_^
In a side note, I've decided to buy Stardust, because the movie is rocking. The book will undoubtedly rock even more. I WANT.
Officially speakig, Hufflepuffs get the "loyal" designator, but... Honestly, only Gryffindors and Slytherins show their traits to me. And then it's to the point of utter cliche. I think it's because JKR designated Gryffindors as protagonists, Slytherins and antagonists. Everyone else gets to be background.
I was raised in Arizona. So "heat" is an understatement. I start getting comfortable at 80-ish, when everyone around me starts complaining about the heat. (sweatdrop) Exact opposites, much?

*Snickers* Ah, yes. I do so love my Captain Shakespeare. XD I WANT THAT BOOK! But even if it's completely different from the book, I'll love the movie. It's so hard NOT to. It's as good as a great fanficiton. *Sighs happily* It's on my top 5 list, easy. Or top 10, at the very least.
I already own it. :D Saw it in theatre, and then got it for Christmas. CHYAH.
Well, that's true.....*Shrugs* Eh.
great. My dad yelled at me again. e_e Sheesh. I wish they'd just get a divorce already, sheesh. Make MY life easier, at least.
Haha. I've been to Arizona. It's pretty, in its' way. But definitely not my kind of country.
*Grimaces* It's 34 degrees outside, and I'm STILL feeling hot in the house.
Ouch.
I really need to move back to where it's cold for longer then a few hours during the day. *Sighs* Can't wait for college, then I can go somewhere nice and cold when it should be. I don't mean warmth/heat during SUMMER, but ONLY then. (The occasional odd day outside of summer is fine; I don't have a problem with odd weather every now and then when it comes to that.)

Urg. (hug) I know how that goes. :/ Feel free to rant, if you need to.
Arizona... I detest. I love the people I still have over there, but... desert? Give me green!
You were hot and I was frozen, lol. I'm thinking Hawaii for a final destination, honestly. Mild winters and lots of greenery. (happy sigh) It also has the advantage of being beastly hard for family to randomly appear on. Plane or boat would be necessary, which means plans in advance.
Aside: I would so die in Japan. x.x COLD.

My first thought when I saw the pirates come in and see Septimus about to stab C. Shakespeare was, "And if they were a tad faster in the brain, they'd realize that, change a few details, and that would be a very....interesting.....position."
I love rival 'ships. Don't ask me why. *Shrugs* Then again, i love 'most all 'ships. *Laughs sheepishly* I'm just too open minded. There's a quote somewhere that says, "Some people are so open-minded their brains fall out." That fits me to a T. XD (That explains why I've been so forgetful lately....>_< Hmm!)
For "final destination", I'm think Washington, New Hampshire, Massachusetts..... very green, nice summers, cold, snowy winters (in WA, that strongly depends on where you live; where I lived was about 15 minutes or less from the pacific, so we got a lot of slush, too....snowball fights were interesting, but snow never lasted nearly long enough! *pouts*), beautiful and fantasy-like in many of its own ways. *Smiles* Florida has places that fit that last bit, but, then again, as does every place.
Japan=you die, eh? Hmm. Stick to somewhere else, then. XD

(snicker) I thought that too, but I watched it with my Grandpa in the room. He was already kind of shocked at the dress. :\ Rival ships do rock so much. XD The passion and anger just have to be hiding something, right? Right? (tries to drag Harry and Draco out of the proverbial closet)
Really? I've never heard that one. But it explains why I lost my keys three times last week. o.o; Maybe we should wear hats?
(shivers) I remember Washington. Blech. City. But I guess that's unavoidable for college. Geez, I'm picky about my chosen habitat. Never realized.
lol I'd love to visit, but most buildings don't have central heating. o.o!
