I think kids are taught to learn words from context, so while they can use said words in a sentence correctly it's hard to give an exact definition of them unless you actually go look them up in a dictionary.
(This is why for me, 'couple' (numerically) is three or more and 'few' is one or two. Ahahaha oh parsing.)
