Well actually, back then it was quite an attractive thing, to have large hips. Nowadays, for all that women try to force their bodies into shapes they will just never be, it's been proven that most men actually gravitate more to more shapely women, then very skinny women. Subconsciously, it signifies fertility, which is a primal instinct to go after, really; although most nowadays are quite unaware of this existing at all.
