RE: Transformative Works

Ooookay so apparently I need to do more than assume people understand that there are lines that should not be crossed. There was An Incident, and I don't want to name names or point fingers since you may be reading this in the far future, but let's just say that The Line Was Crossed. So I'm revising this for clarity. Not that this was actually READ before said line was crossed, but for my own peace of mind...

My license is Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. What this means is that you can remix, make art for/based off of, podfic, translate or do whatever else your heart desires so long as it's transformative and you attribute the original. This is still a blanket statement for fanworks. You MAY NOT involve my work in any commercial venture, repost/transform without attributing me as the author or refuse to allow others the same ability to transform the work you based off of mine.

TL;DR: credit, source, no money and don't be a hypocrite.

Please note that you should talk to me about the following:

1) If it's coauthored (Especially this! Please ask me first!)
2) If you are distributing, printing, publishing or in any way compiling my work.
3) This goes extra for paper or anything where money may be changing hands for any reason.
4) No, really, even just covering costs. TALK TO ME.

I would appreciate an email, a comment or even just a tweet if you do base something off of my work. This is not at ALL a requirement. I understand how nerve-wracking that sort of thing can be, so if you're not comfortable with that feel free to not. However, I do enjoy squealing over stuff.

As a farther note, my user name is pronounced: tsoo-key-noh-fairy. One day, I'll try to get an audio file up lol.

(no subject)

(creeps in)

Not dead. Just incredibly busy and mostly not thinking in long-series thoughts. (Twitter and Tumblr are terrible mind-sinks. Interaction and stimulation without commitment! How very enabling!) But since I turn 30 in less than 4 hours, I figured I'd drop a note here.

TL;DR: House is bought! I have moved in! New office! Family is... still dicking around, because of course they are. Papa passed away in December, which I'm still coming to terms with. I guess part of me knew that he wasn't going to come back home, but I'm too good at fooling myself. And of course said Dicking Around Family are handling the matter of life insurance and final expenses gracefully. By which I mean I'm pretty sure there might be murder, and there's definitely going to be an alignment in who is never being talked to again.

But I have a new house (and even some furniture!), a fulltime position with benefits and am settling in. Things will have to hit a new normal eventually, right?

I meant to do this last week, but got sidetracked.

I officially started last week. And apparently they decided to back-date my pay? IDK how that actually works, other than that it gave me more money than anticipated and HR says it's groovy, so... uh, yay money?

In personal news... no news. Emma & co are suspiciously silent to requests for information. I'm considering this a sign that I can safely start stashing away cash for a down payment on a house. (I'm going to be in the area for years yet, may as well now that it's affordable.)

I also have yet another kitty! This brings me up to five, which I understand is the official minimum for Crazy Cat Lady status. I've filled out my paperwork and have been told my membership package is in the mail.

I spotted him on my way to work the Friday before last, trapped on a highway bridge in serious danger of being squished. D: So of course, as soon as I realized ZOMG KITTEN!!! I pulled over and chased his little ass down and dragged him into my car. I then lost him. I couldn't find him anywhere, and I'd been opening the doors in the search enough that I sort of assumed he'd escaped, so I left down some water (just in case) and proceeded with checking every hour or so until it became obvious that he wasn't there. I woke up the next morning with a weird feeling like I should check again just in case, and lo! There was a kitten behind the fucking dash board. Of course, the little shit bit me when I pulled him out, but I got him inside at least. Luckily, it had been a cool couple of days, so he wasn't in bad shape.

Since it was a Saturday and literally nowhere is open on weekends around here, I stuck him in a canvas traveling kennel with food and water until I could get him into a vet on Tuesday. There's not any no-kill shelters in my area, just a couple places that take in what they can when they can. All of them? Completely full up. I even met some other people in my same situation at the vet. So I'm taking the hint and he's alllll miiiiine.

According to the vet he was 6 weeks old last Tuesday, so he's about 7 weeks now. Teeny baby. Cupcake adores him, Pumpkin and Set Disapprove, and Duzie is ignoring him. The dogs are mostly a spectrum of fascinated to not giving any fucks. I've decided to name him Derek (the bite is a gift, bonding us through the possibility of rabies).

Pictures as soon as I can get decent ones.

Still here!

Quick update on life while my visiting mother showers.

House situation remains the same. Some day, family will return and I will be free. Fuck knows when that will be.

Richard is back in jail. State wants to keep him for five years, which (with his health) is essentially a life sentence. Currently, the other house is habitated by his boyfriend, his boyfriend's family, one of my cousins and her friend. Considering the people, blockading of the doors continues.

My position at work has been upgraded to staff! This means it shall have full benefits and possibly a raise in pay. The downside is that I have to apply and interview for it. Nothing is guaranteed, which is annoying, but it's a pretty good chance I'll get it.

In the meantime, I'm cut back to 25 hours a week. :| Unamused.

Mother is currently visiting (as mentioned above), and her existence has done terrible things to my writing/editing/etc schedule. She leaves out on Tuesday. I'll miss her, but it'll be nice having the place to myself again. I can't write when she's here. @@ I try, and fail. So I'm looking forward to getting back to work.

Next fic up for editing is girl!Steve2, followed up by vamp!Tony and then onward with the Fallen London AU, woven in and out with Teen Wolf fics. Writing is slowing significantly due to non-fandom writing obligations. (One day, I shall write about that, but today is not that day.)

And now my mom's back and I'm off! Stay safe out there! ♥

Writing update!

Finally, finally posted that auction fic. It had been eating at me, and it's an amazing load off my shoulders to have it up. Hopefully, [personal profile] radiophile will like it enough that it makes up for being oh... about five months late.;;

Now to get the REST of the To Do list in order. With this done, I'm down to six active projects. Of course, other projects crept their way in (gdi brain) and I'm doing some Original Writing that takes some time. (May make a locked post about that later.) At least the official list shrinks! It was double digits! I MAKE PROGRESS.

I also decided that the Fairytale fic is just going to have to become an original. I kind of hate to do it, but trying to find places to etch on the serial numbers was killing it. So it's going to get removed from the To Do List and set aside until I have time to deal with it properly.

(flop) According to the numbers I just ran, if I can just manage to write about 45k and edit about the rest, I'll be finished with this mess and able to concentrate on new stuff rather than stuff that's been clogging the works. Guilt over unfinished fics is a killer.

Fandom is back in diapers

Well, that was an exciting day. I am increasingly disenchanted with young people and current fandom. :\

IDK how many of you follow me on Tumblr (hiii from the hellscape), but there was An Incident. Mucca sums it up beautifully, saving me the time. TL;DR, n00bs in fandom who don't know what they're doing and think this is all Brand New!!!1! who then proceed to make problems for the rest of us. Hilariously, this mostly was resolved because the smallish core of old!fandom remains pretty well intact, and we all knew damned well that we hadn't given permission. If it had been just me, without knowing Valtyr or Pen or anyone, I might have spent ages looking to find if I'd missed an email and then would have likely let the giveaway slide. At least, until/if I caught the commercial angle. IDK then; probably an explosion to rival potential of the supervolcano under Yellowstone, wherein none would be left standing and it would just be a mess of ashes and regret.

And I keep coming back to the fact that it's a good idea. If the poster in question had just been polite and asked, not left it up for money (even if at-cost), not abused NaNo... This is not something I would be unhappy with. In fact, done well, I'd be all over it. Even though that's not the fic of mine I would have chosen for inclusion, just having a printed collection of high quality old favorites would have been so cool. I've got boxes of stuff I printed off back in high school that I still comb through now and then.

As it is, I've updated my blanket statement to be a little more serious and a lot more specific. Still kind of pissed at the way the whole mess went down, but I feel bad for the OP, and I hope the internet isn't too hard on her. Permission is Important! Let this be a lesson to you, internet!

Hopefully, someone will take the same idea and run with it in a more informed way. When/if that happens, my money is ready.

It's not me. It's you.

So, I'm finally owning up to the fact that I don't really like what Steve/Tony fandom's become. I still love the characters and the whole pairing and chatting about them and spinning the wheels about maybe and what if. I love scans and spoilers and I'm dying to see IM3, and when I'm with select people (not naming names, but you probably know who you are) I'm able to dig up that same old enthusiasm.

Because what I love is what Steve/Tony used to be. I wallowed in the long, plotty fic where the romance was often parallel (or secondary! gasp!) to the action plot, I reveled in trivia and character dissections, in long threads about fic ideas and plot lines. And while the fic might have been thin on the ground, there was a pretty good chance that whatever came through would be good quality.

Now... IDK. I'm getting tired of feeling like 95% of the time when I run across a Steve/Tony post, it's not talking about the same characters, even when we're referencing the same universes. The characterizations are barely recognizable, at best. WTF is with SuperFamily and how do I burn it with fire? And Deadpool/Spider-Man? Does anyone even know who Deadpool is anymore? And Natasha does have a personality, you know! It's occasionally cute but for FFS, it's OOC, at least admit that. It's all weird and disconcerting and leaves me feeling like I tried to climb some stairs and my feet slipped out from under me.

I don't even read the fic anymore because the hit:miss ratio has gotten incredibly heavy on the miss. Sturgeon's Law has taken effect. And since most of my fandom engagement is in reading... IDK what's really left for me. Writing is great, but it's mostly solitary work. I can't fangirl on writing alone. Some can; I'm not one of them. So yeah, I'm just BOFQing it up over here and finally admitting something that's been bugging me for a while. No one wants to be that fan, and I bit my lip a thousand times to keep from proving the "comics/old fans are meeeeeeean" whiners true. But here it is: I'm not happy with fandom, and it doesn't seem to be going away. :\

An Anniversary of Note

29 years prior to this day, I was forcible expelled screaming from where I had been held captive in a uterus for nine months.

In other words, it's my birthday! And a lovely one it's been. Last night I got my hair done back up in rainbows (pictures pending, thanks dial-up internet >:[ ), went to dinner with a cousin and her boyfriend (other cousin & her attachments skipped out, completely predictably; at this point, I'm neither surprised nor hurt) and went to see Warm Bodies (good movie, not great, but worth the admission).

Today, the day of the Birth itself, was nice and peaceful. Twitter people kept saying nice things to me, and [personal profile] cookinguptales and [personal profile] valtyr both got me Luxuriantly Coiffed Sorrow-Spiders in Fallen London, which were enough for me to get my very own Green-Eyed Devil and to keep one of the darlings for my own. Isn't it adorable?

I also finished reading a truly atrocious romance novel: The Naked Viscount by Sally MacKenzie. I may do a review of it, either on here or on Tumblr. Let's just say that I'm glad I only paid $0.47 for it. I can't believe there's a series, and this one's supposedly the best according to reviews. Most of that less-than-fifty-cents value was in snark.

The major downside to having read it is that I am all out of patience for questionable writing for a while. Tried to read a fic and got thrown out by one tiny mistake. :( Hopefully I will recover quickly.

Other than the above, matters move slowly. I'm inching along in the Auction Fic (20k and counting), but due to The Matter of My Birth, I've not written or done anything really productive this weekend. And it's nice.

Why do novelizations universally suck?

No, really. Why?

Quick backstory: I recently got an eReader as a gift to myself! (Kobo Touch, am in love with it thus far, though I had to sell a couple of souls just to get my hands on the damned thing.) Change jars build up over time, yo! So I was looking for books to add to it and thought, "Hey, the Teen Wolf novelization is out there! Maybe I should take a peek at that."

And then I hesitated and had to ask, Do I really want to spend money on a book I won't finish? Because, mark my words, I won't finish it. I already know this without even having looked at the previews or any reviews. I am not one of those people who will trudge through a book solely for completion's sake. If it sucks, I will throw it against a wall and then pawn it off on a relative or, in extreme cases, Goodwill. (I may eventually find and designate an "instead of eBook" throwing object for these occasions.)

I've read novelizations before. I've read the Sailor Moon novels (rehashes of the US episodes, poorly written, unimaginative), started the Iron Man II novelization (absolutely unreadable, dull, full of both plot holes and SPaG errors) and backed slowly away from many others after just glancing through them. Why is this a thing?

Ideally, novelizations should be another way to lure people into the franchise. "Oh, I liked that book, I'll give the movie a try!" Alternately, they're a way to get current fans to give you money. "OMG THEY MADE A BOOK!" There should be no How Desperate Am I? question. No wrangling with yourself over purchasing sub-quality material, no rolling your eyes because "they made a book out of that?", secure in the knowledge that it will suck, and you will be glad to have saved yourself a couple of bucks. Setting aside for a moment the "I can get better shit for free on the internet" issue, it's just a matter of common sense. You wouldn't go to a T-shirt company, have your logo printed on a t-shirt and just sort of shrug when the shirts show up holey with the logo smudged, then expect people to pay $20 for it!

I'm not expecting Terry Pratchett or Stephen King, here. Just something entertaining, readable and tied into an existing franchise. I don't get why this is so hard! Fans do it all the time. Track down a popular author in your franchise with work you like and say, "Write me a story with these specs and I'll give you Real People Money, with bonus bragging rights and maybe some merch." Hell, hold a fanfic contest and say that the top however-many will get published in a short story anthology. (Trickier, but not unfeasible, I think.)

Or at fucking least make sure your questionably chosen author has a fucking editor.

Note: Copypasta'd to Tumblr, since that's where Teen Wolf hangs, and I feel this is Relevant.

I have utterly failed at keeping up with DW lately. /o\ I'm just tired and stressed. Home life is a hassle, as always. Happy Halloween!

Once again, tomorrow it is November.

NaNoWriMo is coming.

I've done terribly when it comes to editing/posting my last two NaNos. (I know, I know D: I'm a horrible editor.) This year, I'm going to buckle down and finish that damnable Ults monster I've been poking for freaking ever. IDK if I'll post excerpts this year..? I usually do, because Hello, Public Shame! It works! But starting towards the end of the fic, that seems a bit odd to post excerpts and updates for. Hm. Either way, I figure I can grind out the rest in however many days and still have time to get something done for [community profile] apocalypsebang. (Author signups don't end until rough drafts are due, which is 12/12/12! Hint hint.) Then, the annual [community profile] cap_ironman winter exchange! And then and then and then...

I feel like I should post a list of Fics I Need To Write and The Order I Am Supposedly Writing Them In. Just so people can hold my nose to the grindstone. :( But so many shiny ideas!

All of this shall be followed by flailing dramatically at the winter break because my mother is coming to visit (without my father, whew) and Shit Shall Get Done. I finally have permission to "treat the house as my own" (translation: "we're not coming back any time soon"), which means renting a truck and getting to work. With my mom there, I might even be able to get the guest bedrooms back in order! Fencing repaired &/or installed! A shed put up for hay! Get the heater fixed, or at least evaluated and told "lol buy a new one". Hell, at this point I will settle for "throw away trash that various people refuse to admit is trash". "We can fix it one day" is no excuse.

Finally, a quick Halloween fic! It's Ults, set (very roughly) in current canon. Which means yes, Steve is currently PotUS. You can find it here: President CapWolf.

It's an Ultimates SciFi AU, about 45k~ words. Even just looking it over, pointing out typos/blatant bullshut and whapping it with, "BAD AUTHOR. NO COOKIE" would be a help. State of the Faerii

Oh, DW, I missed you baby.

So, I have been a quiet Faerii lately, so a quick run down of life:

Everything's groovy.

No, really. I haven't seen Richard in weeks, Teen Wolf is just active enough to keep me from languishing while I wait for the Avengers to chill, and I'm very (omg so much!) pleased with my artists for the Cap/Iron Man Bang.

I'm going to [livejournal.com profile] wincon in October (leaving the 16th, return the 23rd). Current plans are to attend as one of the scarlet stockings. This isn't a costume I should have put off to the last second, so we'll see how it goes in real life.

Other than that, kittens grow well. They're more than old enough to be sent to new homes, but I can't find anyone who'll take them! If anyone has friends in the Florida Panhandle who are interested in a kitten, hit me up. If worst comes to worst, I may end up catapulted into being a An Old Cat Lady before time time. Ah, well, it was inevitable.

On writing news, the submission to the Teen Wolf contest went off without a hitch, and I will post the fic as soon as I lose the contest. C/IM Bang needs editing, but not terribly bad. It's less horrible than I expected. (Still need to add a sex scene, gdi.) I'm also working on [community profile] polybigbang. This is where it gets trickier. I'm going to use Poly Bang as an impetus to force me to finish that massive monster of an Ultimates Fairy Tale AU. But [personal profile] sunspot and I are bros and I don't want to let her down by not submitting. So I'm doing two polybangs, for an estimated total of 100k new words. Due by October 10.

With a Big Bang in need of editing.

And ears to create and sew onto hoodies.

While cobbling together a decent costume.

I'll give you a second to pantomime about how you can't believe I'm this stupid. No, it's cool, I get it.

(twiddles thumbs) ¬.¬

If anyone needs me, I'm curled up into a ball under my desk wondering how I keep doing this to myself.

ETA: VH1 is being shipped with AfterElton by Teen Wolf, after having been set up by Entertainment Weekly. I feel like we've crossed some sort of fannish event horizon.
