Babylon 5 had a really mixed bag as far as novels went. I think part of that was that it was a really tightly knit arc, so most plot and characterisation got Jossed almost immediately. There was one actual good one, and that was by the show runner's wife.

I think part of what worked for Trek is that they were long running, but another part was that they were hugely episodic (save DS9 towards the end). So it was easy to play around with the characters and not bother with canon biting you in the nose later. Star Wars they had some kind of Central Planning Committee to keep the expanded universe straight.

SGA was just luck in its authors. Other fandoms have not been.
